Iron (Fe) is an essential mineral belonging to trace elements. As human body is unable to produce it itself a constant and sufficient absorption of iron from food is essential. It is the main component of the blood pigment haemoglobin which is responsible for oxygen transport from the lungs to body tissues and, in turn, for elimination of carbon dioxide. About 30% of body iron is stored in the form of ferritin and hemosiderin. Iron contributes to a normal functioning of the immune system helping to alleviate fatigue and exhaustion.
