Activated charcoal is important for our digestive system because of its capability of bonding useless substances and expelling them from the body. It is manufactured from coal, wood or coconuts. It has a specific porous structure and an extensive inner surface (400 – 1500m2/g) thanks to which it can adsorb a great quantity of substances. The expression of animal charcoal, which is almost an identical product and is referred to as a synonym incorrectly, was used in the past. Activated charcoal is used to deal with flatulence problems, to maintain intestinal comfort and is also recommended for reducing excessive gas production after meals.
